A beginner-friendly step-by-step guide

This tutorial guides you through creating a simple 3D wire tulip using one continuous line of wire. Take your time with each step—the small details really make a difference. For a smoother and more detailed walkthrough, you can also watch the full tutorial video: https://youtu.be/RjSB52NqmIU

Materials You’ll Need
1. Measure the Stem

Start by deciding the length of your flower

  • Measure about 1.5× the height of your vase for a balanced look.
  • Create a sharp bend at that point—this will become the center of your flower.
2. Create Your First Petal

This sets the foundation for everything.

  • Gently bend the wire into a rounded teardrop shape (use your shaping guide if needed).
  • Cross the wire over the center point.
  • Hold the intersection tightly and twist twice to secure it.

3. Build All 5 Petals

Now repeat the process, alternating directions.

  • Second petal: cross under the center point
  • Third petal: cross over the center
  • Fourth petal: cross under again
  • Fifth petal: repeat—and notice how the petals naturally gather together

This alternating pattern helps the petals sit evenly.

4. Secure the Petals

Let’s lightly hold everything in place.

  • Wrap two petals together, skip one, then wrap the next two
  • Repeat this process 5 times (once per petal)

This keeps the structure balanced and centered.

5. Shape the Petals

Now refine the form.

  • Work one petal at a time since they overlap
  • Create a slightly sharper angle at the bottom
  • Smooth out the sides so they appear more straight and clean

Take it slow—this step really defines the tulip shape.

6. Cut the Working Wire

Prepare for the next step.

  • Cut a piece of wire around 15–18 inches
  • Adjust length depending on your flower size
7. Weave to Secure the Base

This step locks the petals together.

  • Weave the wire in a circular motion around the base
  • Go through one petal to the back, then come out through the next
  • Gently pull each time to tighten and keep it neat

Think of it like stitching the petals together.

8. Lock the Flower in Place

Finish securing everything.

  • Stop when you have about 2–3 inches of wire left
  • Make sure the stem is centered behind the flower
  • Wrap the remaining wire tightly around the stem
  • Use pliers to press and secure the end
9. Reposition the Petals

Bring your tulip to life.

  • Starting from the top, push each petal slightly upward
  • Keep the bottom of each petal flat to create that tulip base

10. Final Adjustments

Refine the shape.

  • Gently pull each petal while holding the base steady
  • Make small adjustments until everything feels balanced
11. Add Natural Curves

This is what makes it look real.

  • Lightly tilt the petal tips inward or outward
  • Use your fingers or pliers—whatever feels more comfortable

Small changes here make a big visual difference.

12. Add a Leaf

Because one flower shouldn’t be alone 🌿

  • Make the leaf stem about the same height as your vase
  • Use the shaping guide for proportion if needed
  • Wrap the leaf wire around the stem a few times
  • Trim and secure with pliers
13. Define the Leaf

Add a bit more character.

  • Give the tip a small pinch to define the shape
  • Use your fingers to gently slide along the wire, smoothing each side
14. Finished 🌷

And just like that—your tulip is complete.

Try making multiple flowers and leaves, and experiment with different arrangements.
Each piece will look slightly different from every angle—that’s part of the beauty.

Have fun exploring all the possibilities ✨
